Debunking Carpet Cleaning Myths
May 11, 2022
In the carpet cleaning business, we constantly encounter clients who have been given bad advice over the years. There are a ton of carpet cleaning myths out there, and clearing them up can help stop the cycle of incorrect information that leads to improperly maintained and poorly cleaned carpets. Below, we’ve listed the top six myths and debunked them, so you can have a clearer understanding of how to best clean and care for your carpet.
Myth #1: Carpet cleaning causes carpets to get dirty faster.
This myth is so persistent because, in some cases, it can be true. For example, when steam cleaners utilize soapy detergents in their attempt to clean carpets, those detergents can leave behind a sticky, dirt-attracting residue.
Here at Chem-Dry, in contrast, we don’t rely on sudsy, soapy detergents. Instead, we use our Hot Carbonating Extraction process to clean carpets without producing a residue that could act as a dirt magnet.
Myth #2: Cleaning with a liquid cleaner will cause mold or mildew growth.
Again, this one can be true in some circumstances. Steam cleaners often leave carpets soaking wet cleaning them. When it takes carpets days to dry it can create a breeding ground for mold and mildew. In addition, homeowners commonly wet their carpets when trying to get a spill or spot out without knowing that it will take many hours for these areas to dry.
We take a different approach with our Hot Carbonating Extraction process. We use about 80% less water than conventional steam cleaning processes, which results in significantly faster drying times and knocks out the risk of mold and mildew growth.
Myth #3: If a stain remover says it works on carpet, then it’s safe to use.
Trusting what you read on the back of the bottle before testing it out on a discreet patch of your carpet can be disastrous. Many store bought stain removers can affect the dye in carpets or leave behind tell-tale signs that make the appearance of a stain even worse. If you’re dealing with a difficult spot on your carpet, it’s best to call for professional help rather than risk gambing with a store bought stain remover.
Myth #4: Vacuuming is all the cleaning carpets need.
Vacuuming is absolutely essential for a clean carpet. However, vacuuming in and of itself can only do so much. Vacuuming targets the top layer of carpet, leaving the dirt, dust, and grime that have burrowed deep into the carpet’s backing pad untouched.
Without professional cleaning that gets rid of this deep-set dirt and grime, it will chafe on the carpet’s delicate fibers, contribute to musty smells in your home, and prevent your carpet from ever feeling plush and clean.
Myth #5: Any professional carpet cleaners can get the job done.
Professional carpet cleaning can be a game changer for your carpet. However, not every company is created equal. These days, there are companies using a variety of cleaning techniques, from steam cleaning to dry-compound cleaning. It’s important to take a look at how these cleaning methods work, the formulas and equipment that are used during the process, and the effects they can have on your carpet and your health long term. That way, you can choose a company whose cleaning approach protects the integrity of your carpet as well as the health of your family.
Myth #6: It’s okay to wait until your carpet looks dirty to clean it.
Carpet is made to camouflage dirt. Furthermore, since you see your carpet each and every day, you won’t notice it gradually darken with dirt over time. If you wait until your carpet is visibly dirty, all the dirt and grime within it could have already done lasting damage to the carpet’s longevity.
It’s highly recommended to get on a regular carpet cleaning schedule so you never have to wonder whether it’s time to call in a professional team or if you should wait a while. Most carpet cleaning manufacturers recommend having your carpet cleaned once or twice a year, depending on whether you have children and pets or struggle with allergies.
